Driver's licence tests will be more stringent and random breath testing more rigorous under plans announced yesterday by the State Government's reconstituted Staysafe committee.
Staysafe is the popular term for the parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety, which introduced RBT to NSW in 1983.
The new chairman of the committee, Mr Paul Zammit (Lib, Strathfield), said yesterday that Staysafe would also work towards driver education and towards changing the attitude of many drivers, which experts agreed was the only way to bring down the road toll.
The committee had also resolved to immediately investigate bicyclists'safety, he said.
